Our Story

Like all families, our 2020 was spent in lockdown with the COVID19 pandemic. In our hometown of Yamba, we were working less, and were together at home more than usual. We thought it would be a great idea to do some research on the areas around the Mid north coast and hinterland regions of NSW. Upon the relaxation of lockdown laws, we decided to go and explore the hills and valleys of our region. Seeing some beautiful older buildings along the way, we decided to try to find a property to bring back to life, ideally in the hills where the climate is cooler.

Our journey took us to Ulong, in the hills above Coffs Harbour, surrounded by rainforest, creeks and gullies. The Smith family stopped outside a weatherboard Chapel, with a ‘for sale’ sign outside. The Chapel was still occasionally used by the community for services, but its days as a house of worship were at an end.

It didn’t take long for us to fall in love with this beautiful building, the village and the surrounding hills. We could see how much work was needed to restore our little Chapel. We wanted to honour the craftsmanship of the building, remembering its history and the special place it holds in the Ulong community. We talked to the locals, who would call in when we were working, telling us their stories of the Chapel.

Our family’s vision for the Ulong Chapel was to retain its heritage and structure, whilst bringing in some modern elements and comfort. Our collaboration with the builder, engineer, draughtsman, local trades people and the Council enabled the Ulong Chapel to be restored and reimagined, allowing the main hall and ante rooms of the building to be retained as they have been for almost 100 years, whilst adding a loft, bathrooms and wide verandah.

Now that the work is done, we are happy that we have been able to convert this heritage Chapel into a beautiful and unique place to stay. We want to share the serenity of the Chapel and its setting, through offering it as a small wedding ceremony. Our experience in events planning and the creative arts will bring this to life.

We are excited that the doors of the Ulong Chapel can now be open to welcome new visitors, for rest, for celebration, for new beginnings.
